In the beginning of the tale, the old man's story introduces Sir Robert Redgauntlet to the reader. Redgauntlet is described as a rude, brass, yet brave man. It is important to note that Sir Robert is also compared to the devil, foreshadowing Sir Robert's fate in the afterlife.
