Where does Jack find peace and solace? With whom does he talk?

Jack finds his greatest comfort in the barn with the animals: the cows, cats and the dog. He finds comfort in listening to the cows chew and the scent of their breath. When he walks them to pasture, he is aware of the smells and tastes of living in the country. Jack talks to no one but himself while he works in the barn.
