The cherries and red raspberries Jack picks in the morning are sweet, as is the entire countryside, the narrator explains. The smell of the ensilage in the silo is sweet. The mornings are also sweet symbolically, in that Jack's anxiety is at bay and he is able to enjoy the sounds and smells of the cows in the barn, the songs of the birds, the way the sunlight hits the berries on the bush.
