Dale Hawthorne takes up chain smoking after the accident, and often stays awake at night pacing from room to room smoking. He takes long rides on his motorcycle and contemplates a suicide he can never commit to. Hawthorne also leaves the farm, sometimes for days and weeks, to go off and sleep with other women, abdicating his responsibilities to his wife, children and farm. No one complains, not even his family, as people expected nothing from him in his grief other than survival.
