The narrator explains that Dale Hawthorne "trades off his sorrow for the sorrows of others." What does he mean by this?

By leaving home and being in the company of lonely women in the town, Dale Hawthorne trades his sadness over the loss of his child to hear of the lives of these lonely women he meets. The women are described as tired and unfulfilled country women. Dale can forget his sorrow when he is with them.
