Now that Jack's father is home and the family is together again, Jack does his best to remain apart from the family. He is attempting to escape what is described as "their herding warmth." Jack is angry with his father and his family and wants to spend as little time as possible with them. Much of his free time is spent by himself in the hayloft practicing his French horn.
