Jack's father has been gone over three weeks. In what position does Jack find himself? Have his responsibilities changed? Who is he working with now?

Because it is harvest time, Jack is working in the field to harvest the wheat and alfalfa. Working with him are some of the neighbors and two of Jack's cousins. Jack finds himself working as the oldest male member of the family and deserted by his father, who he imagines has run away.
