Who is Ben Gibson from Ragged Dick and Mark, the Match Boy and what is their importance?

Ben is one of Mark's friends. He helps Mark get away from Mother Watson and teaches him how to survive on the streets. When Hiram Bates discovers that Mark is his grandson, he takes Mark and Ben back to Milwaukee with him.
