Hicks shows his racism and stereotypes most clearly as he intentionally sets up Ramón, a boy from El Salvador with dark skin, to take the fall for Moore’s murder. Hicks assumes that those in power will accept without question that Ramón, J.B., or Trey had something to do with Moore’s murder even though they claim to be innocent. Hicks knows the boys already have one mark against them in the form of the color of their skin.
