What happens to Thomas in the German bunker and who pulls him out?

In the German bunker, Thomas takes a bad head wound and is partially buried by a shell explosion that kills perhaps a dozen of their men. Thomas wakes to find that he is underground. Charlie grabs Thomas by his feet and pulls him out of the ground.
