What does Thomas do on his one day of leave and why does that leave him feeling empty inside?

On their single day of leave before going back to the lines, Thomas decides to see Anna. When he gets to the estaminet, or cafe, he finds that Anna is not there. When he asks where she is, her father tells him that she was killed by a shell. Thomas feels a terrible emptiness in him.
