How does the boys' situation change for the better after the Colonel's wife dies?

When the Colonel's wife dies, Grandma Wolf goes to live with the Colonel in the big house as his live-in servant. The boys' mother comes home to the cottage where they stay. Their mother does some of the Colonel's laundry and sewing, most of which she does from home and they begin to make some money again. Everyone is happy, for now.
