HOW DID DARCY BEHAVE WITH MR LUCUS ON BEING ASKED TO DANCE?

In Chapter Six, Darcy and Elizabeth are both in attendance at a gathing in the Lucas home. When Mr. Lucas asks if the couple will be dancing... Darcy, like a gentleman, offers his hand.

Mr. Darcy, with grave propriety, requested to be allowed the honour of her hand, but in vain. Elizabeth was determined; nor did Sir William at all shake her purpose by his attempt at persuasion.
