David is a member of the Smoke. In the previous novel the reader learns that David was born in the Smoke and raised there. David has never known the restrictions of the city or the realities of the pretty surgery. However, David is the one the uglies contact when they want to leave the city. When Tally went to the Smoke, she quickly fell in love with David and through him learned that there is more to life than being pretty. Unfortunately, when David learns that Tally was responsible for bringing Special Circumstances to the Smoke, and his father's subsequent death, he turns from her. In this novel, it is David waiting for Tally when she arrives at New Smoke. David wants to renew their relationship, but when Tally is forced to choose between David and Zane, she chooses Zane.
