Augustus Brine is a master of Zen who enjoys fishing and enjoys bringing simple pleasures to those around him. Brine is recruited by Gian Hen Gian, King of the Djinn, to defeat Catch. Augustus Brine is well read, marking him as an intellectual and therefore good in the context of the story. Brine also brings with him the unique talent of Zen which allows him to distance himself from the horrific happenings at the climax of the story.
