Geertrui from Postcards from No Man's Land is the old woman who meets Jacob the younger at the grave and tells him the story. She was 19 when Jacob the elder parachuted into the city. Later, when he is wounded, she hides him in her cellar. They fall in love despite the fact that Jacob the Elder is already married. A few months later, when he returns to duty, he is killed and Geertrui finds that she is pregnant with his child. She never tells anyone about it, not even her immediate family until Jacob the younger visits.
