Dirk Wesseling from Postcards from No Man's Land is Geertrui's fiancé. He meets Jacob at his parents house wher ethey hid when the German soldiers come back. When Jacob dies, Dirk marries Geertrui to save her from the scandal of being with child and unmarried. He swears her to secrecy about the parentage of the child (it is Jacob's).
