How does the author use foreshadowing in Possession?

Byatt uses foreshadowing to enhance the mood and keep the reader guessing. One example of foreshadowing can be found in Ash's reaction to the maid's pregnancy..... which foreshadows that like the maid, Christabel will also become pregnant.
