What does Silas realize about Marshal Farmer when he sees him in the daylight in Chapter 3?

When Silas is able to see Marshal Farmer's face clearly in the morning, he realizes that the man is much older than he had thought. Silas can see that the man is practically bald with tufts of scraggly white hair that sprout from his head. His face is broad and weathered as rawhide. There are wrinkles around his eyes which make him seem friendly. He has a red nose and that shock of white beard.
