What does Silas do when he sees a man drawing a bead on Sheriff Chalfont?

Matilda waves at Silas showing him that a man with bright blue fingers is pointing his rifle at the sheriff. Silas yells to the sheriff to look above him. Then Silas fires his rifle and the man who was about to kill the sheriff jerks forward and falls flat on the ground.
