What does Sheriff Chalfont tell Eben about answering his questions truthfull?

Sheriff Chalfont tells Eben to answer his questions truthfully. He says that if Eben tells the truth, he will tell the judge to go easy on him and his brother. Otherwise, he and his brother are looking at a lot of time in the penitentiary. If he does not cooperate, he will have his deputy kill his brother.
