How do Marshal Farmer and Silas find the trail of Silas's pa and the other men?

Marshall Farmer and Silas pick up the trail of the men they are pursuing. The marshall points out the signs he is following to find them. There are piles of horse dung, broken sticks on the forest floor, bends in branches, and puddles too round to be natural that helps Marshall Farmer find their trail.
