What is the surprise at the end of the book? Why is it a surprise?

The surprise ending of this book is when Szymon asks Beruta to marry him and she agrees. It is a surprise because Beruta accuses Chalubinski of killing her husband at the public meeting. She doesn't know that Szymon is also known as Calubinski.
