Who is BZ from Play It as It Lays and what is their importance?

BZ is a producer. He is married to Helene, and he is one of Maria's long time friends. Over the course of the novel, he supports Maria as her relationship with Carter falls apart. Unfortunately, he later learns that Carter is having an affair with his wife. As a result, he takes his own life.
