Who is Ella Guthrie from Plainsong and what is their importance?

Ella Guthrie is Tom's wife. The couple have two children, Ike and Bobby. Ella suffers from severe depression, and she spends the majority of her time in bed. She is unable to cope with her depression, as well as the responsibilities of being a mother. Ella later moves to Denver to live with her sister.
