Starlings are not popular when they winter near the area where Dillard lives. They are smelly, messy, and noisy, banding together in flocks of thousands and taking over entire acres of land. One year, the town of Radford, Virginia, decides to control their starling problem by spraying them with foam so they would die of exposure. The extermination is not successful. They make several other unsuccessful attempts to eradicate large numbers of the birds, but the starlings still thrive there today.
