Dillard believes flowing water is healing. She imagines the water flowing towards her from far upstream. Dillard always looks upstream, never downstream. The future is upstream. The future is light on the water and a spirit. The reason Dillard believes flowing water is healing is because flowing water is always in the present, and it therefore heals memories. Memories are in the past. If one stays in the present, the past is healed, because the past is forgotten.
