The Eskimos, more so than most other Aboriginal cultures, had to possess an intimate understanding of their natural world, or they would not have survived. This idealization of the pre-modern Eskimo culture is understandable in light of the fact that Dillard is attempting to connect with and understand the natural world around Tinker Creek.
