Dillard feels dizzy as she watches debris riding on the water, rush past the bridge. Not only is the creek flooded, but also so is the land. Dillard can no longer distinguish where the original creek bed lies. She wonders what the animals do in a flood, as she watches a drowned muskrat float by. Dillard believes that the bottom of the food chain, mostly the plankton, is destroyed.
