What are the motifs in Phantastes by George MacDonald?

The idea of light and dark appears over and over in the book. The secretary desk is housed in a room that refuses to let light overpower it. Anodos is accompanied for much of his journey by his Shadow. Comfort can sometimes be found in the light and other times in the dark.
