How does Mark Twain use imagery in Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc?

In Book I, the vision Louis witnesses consists of obviously images. The white color of the angel shadow has the electrical characteristic of lightning. Joan detects the approaching angel before seeing it. Something communicates with her and demands more than she believes she can do, and so she begs to be taken off the task.
