Who is Grenouille's Mother from Perfume and what is their importance?

Grenouille's Mother is a fish merchant, who remains unnamed throughout the story. She'd had a number of children before Grenouille's birth, all of whom she'd left to die. Grenouille was only save because his screams were heard by someone passing nearby. His mother was executed for her crimes.
