Based on the text in the thirteenth chapter of the book, a misunderstanding that occurs between Penny and her mother is in relation to the ruby necklace that Penny's mother gives her as a birthday present. Her mother considers the it to be a unique and special gift for Penny, because the ruby on the necklace came from the engagement ring that Penny's father had given to her; while Penny views the transplanted ruby as a symbol to her father fading from her life, as well as that of her mother's.
