Freire tends to see things as dual in nature. He identifies systems of dual elements that work together to form a process or dynamic system. The oppressor and the oppressed are two halves of a whole, two interdependent parts of a system that cannot exist without each other. The oppressed themselves become dual in nature, as they internalize the oppressor within themselves, and this dualism becomes a conflict. The oppressed want freedom, since it is a fundamentally human drive, but they also fear freedom.
