Why does Pax decide to wait by the road after Peter and his father left?

Pax decides to wait by the road. He thinks he senses where home might be, but he believes that the humans have good memories and they will come back to the spot where they left him. Since humans rely on sight alone, he knows he needs to be where they can see him or they might leave again.
