There are a few themes you can consider. Isolation is certainly one of them. Paul feels like he doesn't belong. He isolates himself through an attitude that looks like arrogance. He is kind of like Holden Caulfield without the hunting hat and prostitutes. Paul loses himself in illusion and has trouble accepting reality.
