What is the author's tone in Paul's Case by Willa Cather?

The tone of Paul's case is always a sense of melancholy desperation. Paul clings to the illusions he has about himself and the wealth he feels he deserves. He knows his reality but he fights to escape it. Reality, however, has a way of pulling him back.
