Paul's red carnation flower holds a lot of symbolism. Most critics suggest that the red carnation is a nod to Oscar Wilde who went on trial for homosexuality in 1895. His green carnation became a symbol for gay expression before there ever was such a thing. So, is Paul gay? He probably is or at the very least not certain about his sexuality.
