How does Jay feel about his future plans in the beginning of the novel?

Jay feels uncertain about his future plans in the beginning of the novel. He has just been accepted to the University of Michigan after being rejected by the ivy league schools to which he applied. He is not excited about college and does not know what he wants to study.
