Adam thought the French saw life in a singular light, "a kind of moral moonlight," although he admitted that he romanticized the country. Indeed, he warned that the romance of Paris was the subject of his book, along with showing how a cocooned, expatriate family coped with a new country. He foreshadowed that the book would seek the macro in the micro.
