Who is Arnette Fleetwood from Paradise and what is their importance?

Arnette Fleetwood is K.D.'s girlfriend. Early in the novel, she flees to the Convent, where she miscarries the baby she's carrying. Arnette later goes away to college, and when she returns, she marries K.D. and they have a family.
