Why is Alex questioned by police and what occurs during the meeting?

Alex is approached by two officers at his house: Richard Cash and Calvin Whitehead. The officers ask Alex questions about Jamey, and are particularly interested in the phone call Alex received from Jamey in the hospital at the beginning of the story. The officers try to make Alex say Jamey committed the slasher case murders. However, Alex refuses to answer any questions or provide any information.
