What is the relationship of Alex and Jamey at the end of the story?

At the end of the story, Alex and Jamey are on good terms. Alex tells Jamey that he will learn to cope with his situation and the challenges he faces. He also tells Jamey to call him if he ever needs to. When Alex leaves the hospital, Alex gives him a hug and Jamey thanks him.
