At the end of the story Jamey's mental state is better, but not back to where it should be. He is guilty about the horrible things that happened and believes that everyone hates him. Jamey says that he feels better, but still aches some. He is also having strange dreams and thoughts as his brain tries to adjust to the strain of thinking normally without poison or drugs in his system.
