Much of the novel's backstory surrounds major inequalities in rich and poor. The rich compromise a very small part of the population. After high school, Crake attends the prestigious Watson-Crick Institute where he buds into a formidable geneticist. Jimmy is forced to go to a "poor school" for the arts. Society is strictly based on an ultra capitalist system. Crake becomes a wonder kid geneticist and, being a huge monitory asset to corporations, lives in the luxury of a heavily gated community. Jimmy, living in the squalor of the ignorant masses, vistas Crake and is in awe at the opulence in which the rich live.
