Why did Kirsch's mother place him in an orphanage?

Edmond Kirsch's mother placed him in an orphanage because she struggled to care for him after his father died. She felt she had greatly sinned in getting pregnant out of wedlock so she put Edmond in an orphanage and joined a convent.
