What happened to Admiral Avila's family? How does this influence his actions in the novel?

Avila's wife and son were killed in a bombing of the Cathedral of Seville. This event is the motivator for Avila's faith and also for his actions against Kirsch and others. He blames Kirsch for the bombing.
