What does music represent in the book, Ordinary People: A Novel?

In the novel, music symbolizes uncertainty and the struggle of one’s internal desires. For example, when listening to songs by John Legend, Michael thinks about his own uncertainties in his relationship with Melissa; he loves her, but their relationship is deteriorating.
