Over the course of the novel, the author uses the story of Sir Perceval as a symbol. In the story, Sir Perceval's hands are very different..... one hand is strong and firm..... the other appears to be malnourished. Sir Perceval's hands are said to symbolize the two different lifestyles that Jean must choose between.
