In Oona out of Order, Margarita Montimore uses the recurring theme (motif) of sex, specifically descriptions of Oona's sexual encounters to emphasize the theme of time. When the reader meets Oona she is dating Dale. The author describes their interactions with words like "murder", "violent" and "battle" (14). This intensity exemplifies the fight Oona feels with time during this part of her life. Her uncertainty about the future creates an inner turmoil that manifests in her sensual experience.
